A North Carolina pastor thinks Sen. John McCain’s cancer is a tragic but important part of the nation’s healthcare debate.
Jon Pavlovitz, who lives in Wake Forest and works as a pastor at North Raleigh Community Church Downtown, has a blog called “Stuff that needs to be said” in which he writes about a myriad of topics and has garnered criticism for his politics and preaching. Some of his posts have gone viral. But, this time, he writes that McCain’s illness isn’t political.
“(It) isn’t disrespectful, it isn’t in poor taste, and it isn’t political opportunism—it’s the goddamn point,” Pavlovitz wrote about the senator’s tragic diagnosis in relation to the national healthcare debate.
“The personal hell that John McCain and his loved ones are walking through right now is the point of it all,” he wrote on July 19.
The Washington Journal called Pavlovitz’ piece, “A Christian Pastor Just Said What Democrats Are Too PC To Say About McCain and Trumpcare.”
Pavlovitz argued that everyone – from national, household names like McCain to normal, everyday people – deserve the treatment necessary to preserve their lives and health.
“John McCain deserves life,” Pavlovitz wrote. “He deserves to have every available resource exhausted to try and make him well. His family deserves this. His wife and his children deserve it. The people who treasure him deserve it. They deserve it, not because he’s wealthy or known or ‘important’—but simply because he’s loved by someone who wants more time with him. That’s enough for me. Every human being deserves this. Every spouse and every child and every treasured person.”
