RALEIGH – A couple weeks ago Democrats got caught flatfooted when N.C. House Speaker Tim Moore (R-Cleveland) held a veto override vote on the House Floor. The vote was on the calendar; there were enough members in the chamber for a quorum; and, importantly, enough votes to pass the override. Democrats went crazy, to say the least, and then pulled out every low blow they could think of to cover up for the fact that they simply dropped the ball.
So, where were all those Democrats who were not in the chamber? Some slips of the tongue suggested they were in the basement tweaking district maps. While this wreaks of hypocrisy after the Left excoriated Republicans for there ‘secret’ map-drawing, it is also in direct violation of the court order mandating all redistricting be done in the public eye.
From Civitas Institute‘s Brooke Medina:
“[…] During the vote, Rep. Deb Butler (D-Brunswick), began an impassioned speech in which she chastised Republican legislators for calling a vote while her colleagues were, “…downstairs right now trying to redraw partisan-heavy maps.” This admission is extremely concerning because a recent court order requires all redistricting activities to occur in public view on the top floors of the Legislative Office Building, which doesn’t appear to have been occupied during that time.
As a result of this admission, which would acknowledge a violation of a court order, Civitas Institute filed 41 public records requests. To date, we have received no communications of any kind from legislators or their offices, aside from a brief response by Rep. Darren Jackson stating, “Without waiving any rights of privilege to my knowledge there was no meeting to do what you reference. House Democrats on finance meet at 8 am to prepare for the 9 am meeting.”
“Were the Democrats drawing maps? That’s what we’re trying to find out.” said Civitas Policy Director, Bob Luebke, “If the assertion is not true, it’s pretty easy to deny using calendars or meeting schedules. To date, however, we have not received a single response detailing any of the 38 legislators whereabouts. What would you think?” […]”
Whenever the Democrats get allworked up in a lather pointing their fingers at Republicans for wrongdoing, it is often a classic case of projection.
Consider the impeachment drama on the national stage with President Trump first being accused of colluding with Russia, now the Ukraine allegations, when all the actual evidence suggests it is Democrats tainted with corruption in these areas. The same could ring true for North Carolina’s Democrats crowing about Republicans secretly trying to pull wool over the people’s eyes to gain unfair political advantage. As they point that finger, the rest of their digits are telling us who the real culprits are.
