PIERRE, SD – As even Republicans in Washington, D.C. make calls for stricter (unconstitutional) gun control measures — ‘Red flag’ laws specifically — in the wake of a pair of mass shootings, more than two dozen state lawmakers with an understanding and dedication to our core freedoms are urging those in our nation’s capital to reject such ineffective proposals that violate the Bill of Rights. (And to think that Democrats don’t think the laws go far enough)
Oh, they’re not from North Carolina. A letter signed by 26 current and former state lawmakers in South Dakota laying out exactly why the federal government should reject ‘Red Flag’ laws was sent to President Donald Trump and the state’s congressional delegation.
From Rapid City Journal:
“In a letter sent Monday to President Donald Trump and South Dakota’s Sens. John Thune and Mike Rounds and Rep. Dusty Johnson, 26 former and current state legislators denounced recent talk to pass a nationwide red flag law, which would allow judges to grant orders of protection against people found to be a danger to themselves or others, preventing them from possessing firearms for up to one year at a time.
The legislators called such laws, which are already in place in 17 states, “counterproductive measures that grossly violate the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th Amendment rights of American citizens.” […]”
The lawmakers are absolutely right about these constitutional violations presented by Red Flag laws, but more than merely asserting it, they make a forceful argument for how ineffective and easily abused these laws truly are.
The South Dakota lawmakers make a powerful and principles case, but they’re a small state with limited pull. But where are our North Carolina lawmakers penning such letters to the president and our congressional delegation in defense of North Carolina citizens’ rights and in resolute opposition to this Big Government gun control push? The Old North State has quite a bit more leverage as a vital swing state for Trump and influence on Capitol Hill, yet our majority Republican state legislature, or a subset of conservatives, are not respectfully urging the president to avoid this path, or pleading with Sen. Thom Tillis (RINO-NC) to stop his hand holding with Democrats to push more control.
With North Carolina Congressman Mark Meadows being Chair of the House Freedom Caucus, other members of our delegation within positions of leadership or influence (for good or for ill), and North Carolina being such an important state for Trump in 2020, it’s beyond us here at First in Freedom Daily why lawmakers in the N.C. General Assembly aren’t making more noise to sound the alarm over such dangerous laws.
You can read more about the state lawmakers (from SD) are doing just that here.
