The North Carolina General Assembly will return in the first two weeks of December for its final actions of 2024 when legislators are expected to override Gov. Cooper’s latest veto.
On Tuesday, Cooper vetoed Senate Bill 382, the bill that includes funding for disaster relief in western North Carolina, while also diverting some of the governor’s power over the State Board of Elections (NCSBE) and making other shifts to the state government chain of command.
The adjournment resoultion legislators agreed to last week provides a skeletal session from Dec. 2 to Dec. 11.
The state Senate will reconvene in Raleigh for legislative action next Monday, when they are expected to conduct votes. Sen. Bill Rabon, R-Brunswick, clarified before the floor vote that on the Senate side, “we will be scheduled to vote on December 2.”
On the House side, officials are expected to return the following week for votes on Wednesday as originally planned. Speaker of the House Tim Moore, R-Cleveland, explained that the Senate needed to add Dec 2 for their reconveing date.
“I don’t anticipate the House actually having votes on [Dec. 2]. Most likely, the date we would have votes would be December the 11th. And so that should be just one day most likely,” said Rep. Destin Hall, R-Caldwell.
While the official calendar has not been set for next Monday, Senate staff told the Carolina Journal that they anticipate senators will take up Gov. Cooper’s veto of Senate Bill 382. Last week, legislators also said additional funds will be requested for western North Carolina disaster relief efforts when they return.
