Speaker Paul Ryan To Resign By Summer? Who Would Ascend?

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Several weeks ago rumors swirled that Speaker of the House Paul Ryan was anxiously looking a the Capitol exit doors. After passing tax reforms, Ryan reportedly wanted to take a stab at entitlement reform and then hit the road.

Rumors of his departure are swirling once again, and it could offer a chance at a leadership shakeup if more liberty-minded factions can get their ducks in a row.

“Nevada’s 2nd U.S. House District Rep. Mark Amodei, R-Carson City, said on Nevada Newsmakers Monday that Rep. Paul Ryan may soon resign as Speaker of the U.S. House.

Amodei said he was repeating a rumor that’s around Capitol Hill.

“The rumor mill is that Paul Ryan is getting ready to resign in the next 30 to 60 days and that Steve Scalise will be the new Speaker,” Amodei said.”

Scalise being elevated to Speaker would represent a natural progression for the Louisianan congressman currently serving as House Majority Whip, as well as a continuation of Establishment control that has lead to a lot of business as usual in the Swamp.

Scalise himself would be hard to campaign against considering his harrowing experience at the hands of a insane Leftist that was nearly successful in murdering congressmen during a baseball practice. But…

“Now that is interesting because nobody has talked to members (of the U.S. House) on how they are going to vote (on new leadership),” Amodei said. “Now, maybe they have talked to all of the members but me. I don’t know, so that is the rumor mill from last week.”

This could mean that there is really no validity to the rumors, or that a contest to replace Ryan after an early resignation could be open to the field to some degree. If the latter is the case, could a proven leader that actually holds true to conservative principles have a shot at Speaker?

How about Chairman of the House Freedom Caucus Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC)?

Respected, amiable, principled, proven leader, good relationship with President Trump – he seems to check a lot of boxes. Most importantly, though, he doesn’t check the ‘Establishment Hack’ box. That’s great for conservatives, but also diminishes his chances due to all the forces aligned to keep government big and the entrenched interests in power.

Once can dream, and maybe Ryan will bid farewell by Independence Day to make room for a Speaker the Founders would approve of.
