WASHINGTON, D.C. – Voters in North Carolina are, by now, quite familiar with redistricting. Democrats around the country, too, have seemed to notice just how much Sue til Blue redistricting power plays have worked out for Democrats in North Carolina, with a Republican majority no less. In fact, the entire bevy of lawsuits were the result of Democrats’ withdrawal from lording over maps for decades. They want that power back and they are salivating at the chance to be in charge of the 2020 census redistricting process by flipping state legislatures around the country.
Democrats have a $50 million plan to flip state legislatures, and North Carolina is one of the key battlegrounds.
“The plan, backed by Democratic megadonors like Donald Sussman and the Soros family as well as small-dollar donors giving online via ActBlue, represents a sea change for the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, a former backwater in Democratic politics that has transformed as the party grappled with the importance of redistricting. In 2020, the last election before states redraw their political boundaries using new Census data, the winners of many state legislatures get the power to draw congressional lines that will last an entire decade. […]
The group will start by targeting one or more chambers in Arizona, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Texas, and potentially expand over the course of the election to target additional legislative chambers in Florida, Georgia, Kansas, Montana, West Virginia and Wisconsin. […]
And the group is particularly interested in states where state lawmakers have absolute power over the congressional maps and the governor has little influence, like North Carolina. […]”
$50 million of Soros money to try to convince voters to give control of the levers to today’s modern Democrats? We’d like to think that’s a bad investment, but it’s already become hard to rationalize just how far Left the Democratic Party has been allowed to leap. If the plan is successful, Democrats in North Carolina will not hesitate a moment to avail themselves of all the advantages that come with a legislative majority, the very things they’ve been demonizing for years now.
While North Carolina is a one of the more valuable targets to flip for Democrats in 2020, it won’t be the easiest. In fact Democrats may run get run over by a Trump train quite a few of their most prized territories.
“[…] “Democrats can’t beat President Trump and they can’t take back the Senate, so they’re spending staggering sums in state elections to make it easier for radical liberals to win in heavily gerrymandered districts,” RSLC spokesperson David Abrams said. “We’re going to stop them by protecting our majorities in states the Left has failed to win in for years: North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Texas, and more.” […]”
Republicans are intent upon protecting majorities and North Carolina is first on their list. More than protection, Republicans in the Old North State need to capitalize on the 2020 cycle in order to reinforce and expand the majority on Jones Street. In the event that Governor Roy Cooper is reelected, as hard as that would be to swallow, a veto-proof majority is the only insurance for continuing conservative reforms that respect and work for the people of this state. We’ve seen how frustrated the process becomes by simply breaking a super-majority in 2018; imagine if they actually had a majority.
