NC-03 – After battling an illness for months, Congressman Walter B. Jones died on his birthday, Sunday, February 10. He was 76 years old.
We wrote about the legacy of Congressman Jones on his birthday, but in remembrance of the laudable representative from Eastern North Carolina his office made the following statement:
“After faithfully representing the people of Eastern North Carolina in Congress and the state legislature for over 34 years, Congressman Walter B. Jones (NC-3) passed away this afternoon in Greenville, North Carolina. He was 76.
Congressman Jones was a man of the people. With a kind heart and the courage of his convictions, he dedicated his life to serving his Savior and to standing up for Americans who needed a voice. He was a champion for our men and women in uniform and their families, always mindful of their service and sacrifice.
Congressman Jones will long be remembered for his honesty, faith and integrity. He was never afraid to take a principled stand. He was known for his independence, and widely admired across the political spectrum. Some may not have agreed with him, but all recognized that he did what he thought was right.
He will be sorely missed.”
Sorely missed, indeed. Congressman Jones touched a lot of lives during his quarter century of being a voice of principle for the people of the Third District. Everyone who knew, or had the pleasure of meeting him, got the same impression – he was a kind man of integrity, dedicated to his constituents and the values that make the Eastern North Carolina, and America, such a great place.
There will never be another Congressman from NC like Walter. I have known and respected him my entire life. My father worked on his fathers 1965 special election after Herbert Bonner died. He was a great leader and good friend. RIP Walter #ncpol, #ncga

Walter Jones was the real article. He devoted most of his life to public service and his constituents never had to worry about him getting sucked into the Washington bubble. 1/

He and his staff would always take care of constituents who called or wrote seeking help. They genuinely cared about the well-being of the citizens, and it showed.
My prayers are with WBJ’s wife, Joe Ann, and his daughter, Ashely, along with his loyal staff.

I had the pleasure of working with the Congressman and his team on issues important to the military and military families several times. Refreshingly, he was a what-you-see-is-what-you-get kind of man. Patriotic, pleasant, respectful, and welcoming. Prayers for his family.

Walter will be remembered as a man of strong principles, willing to take an unpopular stand when necessary. He was a hard-working and faithful public servant, and he will be sorely missed. Our prayers are with his family – may he rest in peace. 2/2
