RALEIGH – As strong as the advantage of incumbency is, political insiders all seem to be in agreement that Senator Thom Tillis is in some sort of trouble when it comes to reelection in 2020. The primary challenger nipping at his heels, conservative Raleigh businessman Garland Tucker, is out with a new ad pointing out how Tillis exhibits all the same old problems of a double-speaking politician.
Recently the DC press has taken a lot of notice of just how bad Tillis’ reelection prospects really are, and the things pointed out in this ad are exactly why he’s the least popular senator in the nation. But it’s not just a general election Tillis is worried about; he’s evidently very concerned about his main primary challenger. FEC reports showed the Tillis campaign with a huge media ad buy between January and March of 2020 — before the primary — amounting to HALF his campaign war chest.
Those ads will likely be a mix of Tillis puff pieces, disingenuously tying himself to the president and, hit pieces on Tucker. But we don’t have to wait until January to roll our eyes at a Tillis. If you’ve listened to the radio recently you’ve likely heard the latest Tillis ad heavy in Trump quotes of endorsement, calling him ‘a warrior.’ Yet many MAGA voters across North Carolina won’t be fooled by obligatory endorsements, as they have witnessed just what kind of politician he really is.
Actually, in the ad itself, taped when President Trump introduced Tillis at a Fayetteville rally on the eve of two special congressional elections, you can, if you listen carefully, hear the boos when he’s introduced. Not the reception you want as a sitting U.S. Senator up for reelection.
Meanwhile, the Tucker campaign has plenty of material to work with from years of Tillis being Tillis on Capitol Hill. Pushing for amnesty; perpetuating the Russia/Mueller hysteria; declaring Trump did not have a mandate; embracing the Left’s climate change narrative. They’re only just getting started.
