RALEIGH – There’s nothing quite like a vote of confidence from your own children, and that’s exactly what Haley Forest, daughter of Lieutenant Governor Dan Forest, is giving her dad with this new ad in his race for governor.

Of course, when they’re your kids, so you’d hope they wouldn’t vote for the other guy. Still, the as much as parents’ children are a reflection on them, our kids’ reflections on us as parents and people are often the most insightful and honest testaments to character we have.

Character is something we look for in political candidates, but experience keeps our expectations low. If the politics are strong enough, questionable character can sometimes take a back seat to partisanship. When both politics and character are strong, though, it’s a win-win that can engender the kind of enthusiasm only derived from a voting base confident that a candidate holds the values and principles to moor their politics. It’s a recipe needed to win a statewide race against an incumbent, and it seems as if Dan Forest is that kind of candidate.

Over his two terms as lieutenant governor, Forest has leveraged the relatively limited constitutional office to promote conservative policies, school choice and freedom of speech for example, consistent with liberty and prosperity. His daughter’s testimony of her dad’s integrity, then, is a nod to Forest continuing this legacy as governor if he is elected.
