North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction Mo Green commented this week on the Trump administration’s executive order aimed at dismantling the federal Department of Education.
While closing the department would require congressional approval, Green said his office has been closely monitoring federal announcements and communicating with local education leaders. Trump’s executive order outlines a plan to dissolve the US Department of Education and shift authority over education to states and local communities. Green’s department, in coordination with the State Board of Education, is developing a response plan that could be released as early as June.
“The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction has taken a more measured approach rather than reacting hastily,” Green said. “In addition to analyzing that particular executive order, its specifics, and related communications, DPI is sharing information with school districts and charter school leaders and advocating for continued federal funding. Obviously, our first priority is to ensure minimal disruption to services for our 1.5 million students, particularly those supported by federal funds and programs.”
Green made the comments while joining the monthly Council of State meeting via video from New Hanover County. He is continuing his ‘Mo Wants to Know’ tour across the state through April, a listening tour that allows educators, parents, and students to voice their opinions and concerns about education.
