RALEIGH – Just a couple weeks removed from the March For Life, the abortion debate is raging again after New York passed a law allowing abortions up until birth for virtually any reason. Then, closer to home, a Democrat in the Virginia state legislature filed a similar bill that would allow for an abortion mere moments before the birth of a child.
Could such immoral proposals be made in the Old North State? Actually, as an eagle-eyed observer pointed out, they already have.
In 2017 several Democrat sate lawmakers introduced House Bill 563, titled, ‘Whole Women’s Health Act.’
The bill would have eliminated most restrictions on abortion, arguably allowing abortions to be performed at full term. It removed requirements for qualified physicians performing abortions after the 16th week of pregnancy to record findings such as the gestational age of the unborn child, the child’s measurements, and an ultrasound of the child. It also would have eliminated the requirement that abortions after 20 weeks be performed by a physician only in cases of a medical emergency.
Actually, it would have eliminated the requirement for a qualified physician to be involved at all for abortions at 20 weeks or less, but merely a ‘healthcare professional.’
What’s more, is that the legislation would have opened up abortion until the point of birth by removing restrictions and expanding the legal reasons to get an abortion, such as ‘patient safety,’ which could be construed to include avoidance of factors that aggravate mental health problems.
So under this proposed law, an abortion at 40 weeks so a mother can avoid depression or anxiety, could be be viewed as ‘conferring a legitimate health benefit.’
So as much as we’d like to think that we are far removed from such horrific laws being passed in our own state, we are merely a Democratic majority away from these kind of proposals being seriously considered in the N.C. General Assembly.
Are these the kind of values that North Carolinians, whether Democrat or Republican, really stand for?
