Senator-elect Mitt Romney has been around the national political seem for more than a decade now and, unlike Romney’s positions on critical issues, some things never change.
Put simply, Mitt Romney is who we thought he was, to paraphrase the late NFL head coach Dennis Green.
Back in February, when Romney first announced his intentions to run for the U.S. Senate in Utah, it was clear what role he wanted to play Washington – the leader of the “Republican Resistance” against President Trump.
Need proof?
Look no further than the op-ed Romney penned on Tuesday for – surprises, surprise – The Washington Post in which he claimed that President Trump’s “character” falls short of past Presidents.
In the piece, Romney claimed that the “Trump Presidency made a deep descent in December,” and that President Trump has “not risen to the mantle of the office.”
Romney went on to outline for the American people exactly what a President should do and be.
“To a great degree, a presidency shapes the public character of the nation,” Romney wrote. “A president should unite us and inspire us to follow ‘our better angels.’ A president should demonstrate the essential qualities of honesty and integrity, and elevate the national discourse with comity and mutual respect.”
Apparently, in a hilarious bit of hubris, Romney believes he knows best how a President should act despite the fact that the American people have roundly rejected him every time he’s run for the office, and was only able managed one term as the Governor of Massachusetts.
Romney also wrote that “Trump’s words and actions have caused dismay around the world,” a claim he attempted to support by citing a Pew Research Center poll that found people in Germany, Britain, France, Canada, and Sweden do not trust that the President of the United States will “do the right thing in world affairs.”
Of course, Romney failed to mention the fact that this change is an understandable response from countries that have universally relied upon the United States to literally serve as the world’s police – doing all of the hard work on the world’s stage while sacrificing American lives and basically footing the entire bill – now that we have a President that is putting America First and actually asking our allies to pull their own weight.
With the mainstream media on his side and a Republican establishment that’s clamored for his arrival in Washington since Trump burst onto the scene in 2015, Romney will undoubtedly feel emboldened to continue spewing this kind of garbage.
Hopefully, though, the American people will continue to reject Romney at every turn, as they have done so many times before.
