Mark Meadows to Head White House Council to Reopen America

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The chief of staff role for President Donald Trump during an election year was always going to be a challenging job — the entire establishment is still in opposition to the president in one way or another — but former North Carolina Congressman and co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus Mark Meadows couldn’t have predicted just how critical a leadership position this would be in the era of coronavirus chaos.

Meadows has been tapped by President Trump to lead the Council on Reopening America, after an unprecedented shutdown that has shattered records for economic contractions. More importantly, the COVID-19 collapse represents millions of individual Americans whose livelihoods have been squeezed by government edicts to the point of destitution.

President Trump, in announcing the council, also tweeted in reaction to suggestions governors may not go along with whatever reopening timeline the White House suggests.

State and local governments around the country are the ones that actually issued the business closures and ‘Stay at Home’ orders that have led to ruin for much of the economy. Ridiculous examples of draconian overreach have been cropping up along the way, adding serious encroachments on constitutionally guaranteed individual liberties to the already debilitating arbitrary economic suppression.

Many understand that the virus itself may kill, but so too does forced impoverishment resulting from shutdown policies. The president’s focus on reopening America indicates he understands the risk of the former and the real and extensive damage from the latter.

In this way, Meadows will be the pointman in what will be the most significant socioeconomic revival effort since Reconstruction. Who better than the co-founder of the House Freedom Caucus to reclaim economic and civil liberties for Americans?
