WASHINGTON, D.C. – In this age of political division and partisanship, it’s often easy to forget that politicians we love to assign one dimensional characters are often actually dynamic and lovable individuals, politics notwithstanding. This truth is brought to light with the body of late Congressman Elijah Cummings lying in repose on Capitol Hill, illuminated in heartfelt tribute by a that had absolutely nothing in common with him save “an unexpected friendship,” according to the Washington Post.

Congressman Mark Meadows (R-NC), House Freedom Caucus Chair, close confidante and defender of President Donald Trump, and a leading crusader against the Democrats’ perpetual shams had this to say about the late Cummings, a leading Democrat congressman, tireless anti-Trump agitator, and decades long facilitator of much that conservatives detest.

“Perhaps this place, and this country would be better served with a few more ‘unexpected’ friendships. I know I’ve been blessed by one.” – COngressman Mark Meadows on Elijah Cummings

As we end yet another tumultuous week in politics filled to the brim with deception, maleficence, and righteous indignation, the words above serve to remind us of core commonalities and values that ground us as Americans and as people. We owe it to ourselves as individuals and as a nation to not lose that perspective as we approach politics, or life itself.
