CONCORD – Make no mistake, intra-party politics is a down and dirty game when it comes to control of the party. The 2019 NCGOP convention was no exception, it seems, with multiple reports that anti-Womack forces were using kids to hand out hit piece literature during the lunch break before voting began on the convention floor Saturday.
One anonymous delegate at the convention that witnessed the shameless last minute smear campaign said it was unbecoming of the party.
“The lunch break on Saturday these flyers started getting passed out. I found out about it right before 2 pm and the door opened for the voting session. Others spotted kids passing them out and got a picture of the kids, and I did talk to 2 delegates that got [flyers] from adults.
We are trying to track down any information of who was behind this? Who were the kids parents? And what team the adults were on that were also passing this out because the new chairman should make an example out of this and let all Republicans in this state know that this is not how we are going to conduct ourselves in party elections or in public elections in NC.”
Others who witnessed the flyers being peddled by kids saw those kids confer with a man that they judged was “with the party,” donning an ear piece and later checking credentials.
Womack lost the chair race to Michael Whatley, but Chu was successful in her bid for Vice Chair of the NCGOP and may want to start by making sure these kind of shenanigans aren’t tolerated during party elections.
