RALEIGH – Governor Roy Cooper was put between a rock and hard place when the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated masking guidance for those who are vaccinated.
The executive order happy Cooper was in the midst of using the mask mandates as leverage to coerce North Carolinians into getting vaccinated against COVID-19; this new guidance undermined his authority in holding us hostage. That authority, derived from the mythical ‘science and data’ that supports the effectiveness of masks in mitigating the spread of the virus, is in reality sourced from the willingness of people to entertain shades of totalitarianism in the presence of some revolting threat.
So perhaps this was actually a mere awkward moment in which Cooper’s default affinity for the kind of power our system of government is specifically designed to prevent was exposed.
Even so, he artfully couched the stubborn decision to buck ‘science and data’ from the ‘authoritative truth’ of government health bureaucracy as continuing to follow the science and data and opinion of experts. Watch:
