Momentum has yet to build for the 2017 legislative session in its second week, with few committee meeting set for this week and only a few dozen bills filed so far.
One committee that did meet Tuesday was the Senate panel that will handle confirmations of Gov. Roy Cooper’s cabinet secretaries. The group has set up the vetting process for the 10 agency heads, but Cooper’s administration is refusing to request confirmation hearings until their legal challenge to the process is settled in court. Senators say they have the constitutional authority to confirm nominees but haven’t exercised it, and a law passed in a December special session reinstated that ability.
