Despite pushback from concerned parents, the Human Rights Campaign continues to try and force its pro-transgender curriculum into the public school system.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school district in North Carolina is the latest public school district to introduce HRC’s Welcoming Schools program — a pro-homosexuality and pro-transgender curriculum disguised as an anti-bullying, professional development program.
After pressure from concerned parents, CMS administrators withdrew part of the Welcoming Schools program — a book called “Jacob’s New Dress” that celebrates a young boy’s choice to wear dresses to school and urges other boys to do the same.
“The purpose of our elementary schools is to teach writing, reading and arithmetic, not to encourage boys to wear dresses,” Tami Fitzgerald of the North Carolina Values Coalition said. “These lessons found in the ‘Jacob’s New Dress’ and other transgender curriculum are not appropriate for any child whose parents support traditional family values.”
The school district agreed to pull the book, and replaced it with “Red: A Crayon’s Story,” which is about a red crayon that believes he is blue.
“Red has a bright red label, but he is, in fact, blue. His teacher tries to help him be red, his mother tries to help him be red by sending him out on a playdate with a yellow classmate, and the scissors try to help him be red by snipping his label so that he has room to breathe. But Red is miserable. He just can’t be red, no matter how hard he tries,” the Amazon review reads.
Supporters of the Welcoming Schools program criticized CMS’s decision and said the school district should have kept “Jacob’s New Dress.” Children can’t relate to crayons, but they can connect with other children about gender-related topics, they said.
“Every student should have the right to learn from and understand diverse perspectives of the many backgrounds that make up a large school district like CMS,” Chris Sgro, the executive director of Equality NC, said. “It’s sad that some are unwilling to allow students this opportunity and seem to stop at nothing to push their extreme views about LGBTQ people on children at any cost.”
Fitzgerald said CMS’s priority should not be advancing a LGBQT-inclusive, gender-expansive program, though. She said the school district has failed its students by neglecting vital academic standards to incorporate HRC’s Welcoming Schools program into the curriculum.
