WASHINGTON, D.C. – Democrats tried in vain to label the brief government shutdown as the ‘Trump Shutdown’, when everybody and their brother knew it was the ‘Schumer Shutdown.’ That realization was probably why the Democratic leadership in the Senate decided to cave, lest Democrats subject themselves to even more blame and bad press.
But a lot of Leftists on Capitol Hill were not thrilled with Schumer’s giving in, and their letting him hear it.
“Rep. Luis Guttierez (D-IL) grumbled, “They caved. They blinked. That’s what they do.” The only Senate Democrats who held out were from deep blue states, except for 2020 presidential hopeful Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT). House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) even jumped into the fray: “I don’t see that there’s any reason — I’m speaking personally and hearing from my members — to support what was put forth.”
Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA) fumed, “The Majority Leader’s comments last night fell far short of the ironclad guarantee I needed to support a stopgap spending bill. … I will do everything in my power to continue to protect DREAMers from deportation.””
Even though the American people were saddled with yet another Continuing Resolution that raises spending and starts the countdown toward it’s February 9th expiration, Democrats lost a lot politically, as is obvious by their whining.
The American public witnessed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Trump (R-KY) outlast Schumer at the negotiating table and saw Democrat’s ability to use a government shutdown as leverage for immigration concessions evaporate entirely.
Moreover, Democrats made it clear as day that they were responsible for the shutdown because they care more about illegal immigrants than the military, for instance.
And the snipes at Schumer listed above show that they are also lost some support with the Democratic base.
That is all good for Republicans, and even with another showdown scheduled for February, Democrats can’t use it to fight for legalizing ‘Dreamers’ AND their parents after this damaging loss of face.
This is another feather in the cap of President Trump too, who has reinforced his reputation as a competent negotiator that can hold the line when facing pressure from the Left and their media friends.
