JACKSON, MS – Add this to the list of crazy proposals Democratic presidential contenders are making to undermine the Republic. Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) was on the 2020 presidential campaign trail in Mississippi where she called for the elimination of the electoral college. You know, that constitutional protection our framers thought necessary to protect smaller sates (and the individual) from being ruled by a totalitarian mob of simple majorities.
From Politico:
“Sen. Elizabeth Warren on Monday called for abolishing the Electoral College as part of an effort to expand voting rights, making her one of the first Democrats running for president in 2020 to propose such a radical shift in how U.S. presidents are elected. […]
“We need to make sure that every vote counts. And you know, I want to push that right here in Mississippi. Because I think this is an important point,” she said. “My view is that every vote matters. And the way we can make that happen is that we can have national voting and that means get rid of the Electoral College.””
Never mind that a shift to a simple popular vote would absolutely diminish the voters of states like Mississippi because every candidate’s focus would instead be on the highest population centers. Would you want California and New York deciding races (and policy) for North Carolina? Absolutely not, and that’s why our founders designed the electoral college to protect the voices of smaller states and ensure they were not dictated to by larger states.
However radical this proposal seems, unfortunately we will see Democratic presidential candidates seeking to out do each other with ever more insane and unconstitutional proposals. It reminds us of how vitally important the 2020 elections are if we intend to keep America firmly atop her foundation, and reestablish the U.S. Constitution as a central pillar of our governance.
