Durham Mayor Blames Republican Legislature, NRA for Six Shootings in 48 Hours

DURHAM – It is as if Democrats short-circuit when reality confronts them with the failure of their policies. The only reflexive reaction they can muster is ‘More Gun laws’ and ‘The NRA!’ when their liberal-cities are plagued with gun violence. That’s exactly what Durham Mayor Steve Schewel said in response to a total of six shootings in his city just this weekend.

From CBS17:

“[…] “Good gun laws” was Schewel’s second point but he acknowledged the North Carolina General Assembly must act in order for that to happen.

He blamed the power of the NRA lobby as to why legislators have not passed stricter gun laws. […]”

So here he blames the Republican General Assembly and the NRA for shootings in his liberal city. The police chief, at least, was not too afflicted by partisan politics to assess what the cities real problem is – gangs.

“[…] “Based on our preliminary investigative efforts, we believe some of the recent shootings are gang-related, a result of continued retaliation between groups. There is no evidence that suggest the disputes are turf related,” Davis said Wednesday in a statement.

In response, Davis said the Durham Police Department has “began preliminary work” to enhance its gang task force. Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead also agreed to support the effort with additional personnel, the statement said. […]”

This might seem crazy, but soldiers in a gang war don’t seem too responsive to the law and are doubtful lifetime members of the NRA. Mayor Schewel can evade reality all he wants with his political spin, but he can’t avoid the consequences of that reality. Unfortunately that means continued violence while leaders tilt at windmills.
