RALEIGH – Democratic Governor Roy Cooper is basking in the spotlight beaming from stage Left after banning the use of state or federal funds for gay (LGBTQ) conversion therapy for minors. Cooper signed an executive order Friday that directed the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services to “take steps to expressly disallow payment of DHHS allocated state and federal funds for conversion therapy for individual patients” who are under 18.
The purpose of the order, Cooper says, is to “promote and implement actions that protect the wellbeing of all North Carolina residents regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression” and make sure funds “are used only for effective and therapeutic services that are supported by credible evidence and medical experts.”
Conversion therapy has been shown to pose serious health risks, and we should be protecting all of our children, including those who identify as LGBTQ, instead of subjecting them to a dangerous practice.

You won’t find any opposition here to cutting off state and federal taxpayer funds to such elective programs, but let’s take a deeper look at what Cooper is saying. If the wellbeing of all North Carolina residents is important; if protecting our children, all of our children is vital; shouldn’t the governor be signing en executive order condemning other forms of ‘conversion therapy’ too?
After all, it is the Left in North Carolina that fought, successfully for a time, to have the gender transitions of minor children of state employees covered under the state health plan. Does Cooper’s aforementioned perspective apply to the serious health risks associated with ‘gender affirming’ therapy?
While Cooper and the cheerleaders on the Left celebrate this as a win for the children and the LGBTQ community today, they won’t so much as skip a beat in turning right back around and encouraging something at the very least equally detrimental as long as it fits their narrative.
For now they are all busy trying to reelect Roy Cooper with push pieces to appease the Left. With a budget standstill combining with the summer doldrums, Cooper and his media friends are filling the vacuum with plays to the Left.
