Despite Resurgence in Congress, Americans Overwhelmingly Oppose Socialism

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The 116th Congress has featured both freshmen and long-tenured Democrats that fully embrace socialism and get treated like rock stars by a sympathetic media establishment. For everyone else around the country listening to the deranged rhetoric emanating from Democrats on Capitol Hill it is disheartening and disconcerting.

Have we lost our country? What happened to the ‘Land of Liberty’? Have the ‘self-evident truths’ been so obscured that the American public is willing to engage in decidedly un-American political policies more similar to the U.S.S.R. than the U.S.A.?

It should come as a relief that, according to a recent NBC/WSJ poll, most Americans still have their sanity and oppose socialism.

In the poll, just 18 percent of all Americans say they view the term positively, versus 50 percent who see socialism in a negative light.

The numbers for capitalism are almost the exact opposite: 50 percent positive, 19 percent negative.

It’s reassuring to know that the majority of Americans understand pitfalls of socialism, and the virtues of capitalism. But if so many Americans understand this, why does it seem like we’re losing the narrative to millennial politicians that want to abolish fossil fuels and give everyone guaranteed income?

Well, the poll also reveals something that may explain the disconnect. In the poll, Democrats indicated the much more prefer bold action, than pragmatism. So, it makes sense that their celebrity politicians, and those running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, are scrambling to out do each other when it comes to bold Far Left policies prescriptions.

Contrarily, a lot of Republican politicians have for year gravitated toward the pragmatic, ‘play nice,’ form of politics that may keep them on the cocktail party invitation list, but does nothing to advance conservative principles. They’re pragmatic as they lose on policy fights and at the ballot box.

However, Republican voters often want bold approaches to reforming government and the proof is in President Donald Trump’s dramatic ascent in 2016. Some Republican lawmakers have gotten the message, but not nearly enough. As long as Republicans refuse to be bold in their defense of capitalism, individual liberty, and limited-government, the Left will continue to author a narrative that not only distorts the true feelings of the public, but brings us dangerously close to losing America as it was meant to be.
