Democrat NC Senator Files Bill to Abolish Electoral College

RALEIGH – In a sign that the Left is intent upon removing any and all barriers to establishing a tyranny of the majority that our Founding Fathers specifically warned about, a North Carolina State Senator has filed legislation in the General Assembly to abolish the electoral college.

Sen. Wiley Nickel (D-Wake) filed Senate Bill 104 to form an interstate compact that would do away with the system of electoral checks and balances that insures big, populous states don’t bulldoze over smaller states and sovereignty in general.

Today I filed a bill that would abolish the Electoral College and give the Presidency to the candidate who wins the National Popular Vote.

While it may be a pipe dream introducing this bill under Republican majorities in the legislature, it is indicative of just where some Democrats’ heads are at when it comes to constitutional protections of liberty and representative government.

Far from an academic exercise in ideal government, the Left’s grudge against the electoral college is completely self-serving. Take 2016 for example: Hillary Clinton won the popular vote, and would be president under Nickel’s proposal. Except, in the process, sovereign states would be effectively stripped of their sovereignty, along with the citizens therein.

This is exactly what the Founding Fathers were trying to prevent when they designed the enlightened system we have.

“In a pure democracy], [a] common passion or interest will, in almost every case, be felt by a majority of the whole; a communication and concert results from the form of government itself; and there is nothing to check the inducements to sacrifice the weaker party or an obnoxious individual. Hence it is that such democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their deaths.” – James Madison

The very essence of the American experiment rests on the notion that an individual’s rights are unalienable, and cannot be voted away by a majority of his peers.

However, Nickel’s and other Democrats’ entire political philosophy runs directly counter to that idea. To varying degrees they subscribe to the Marxist mantra of empowering the collective to enslave the individual. We’re seeing that more clearly now with Democrats like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, but it exists in more subtle ways through out the political spectrum.

And this isn’t Nickel’s first time filing a bill that rests upon this flawed and immoral premise. Much of the rest of the Left’s agenda in North Carolina, like Medicaid expansion, relies on it, and he has been busy filing bills to that effect.

And before you right Nickel off as merely an a idealistic Leftist merely throwing crazy bills into the waiting paper shredder of the Republican majority, these are the policy ideas that would get serious consideration on Jones and Blount Streets were Old North State Republicans’ recent election trends to continue deteriorating.
