RALEIGH – There has been a general trend among some churches in which their leadership pulls the congregation into a more progressive direction, more social justice friendly, more Woke. This includes participation in the removing, renaming, and sanitizing historical references so as not to offend.
In the latest glaring example of this blend of political and religious correctness, the Southern Baptist Convention is dropping the word ‘Southern’ from its name because it can remind one of the history of slavery in this era of Black Lives Matter protests and anti-racism.
From the Hill:
“Leaders in the Southern Baptist Convention are steadily removing the “Southern” part of the group’s name in an effort that Convention President J.D. Greear said is essential following a summer of Black Lives Matter protests and increased calls for racial justice reform.
In an interview with The Washington Post published Tuesday, Greear said there has been more support to adopt the new name “Great Commission Baptists,” both because of the changing climate in the U.S. and because many have long believed the “Southern Baptist” title no longer adequately encompasses the approximately 50,000 churches that now exist around the globe.
“Our Lord Jesus was not a White Southerner but a brown-skinned Middle Eastern refugee,” Greear told the Post. “Every week we gather to worship a savior who died for the whole world, not one part of it. What we call ourselves should make that clear.” […]”
To be sure, the Southern Baptist Convention does have a history
specifically relating to slavery, and the convention’s origination arguably stemmed from historical divisions over slavery among extant Baptist institutions during that time. Some Southern Baptist Convention leaders expressly supported slavery as biblical.
That history, though, still exists whether or not the word ‘Southern’ is in the name. The change ‘undoes’ nothing; as the would be Great Commission Baptists would still have a genesis story relating to opposition to the abolition of slavery.
What it does do, though, is bend a knee to the Woke Culture of Critical Theory, namely anti-racism, which, despite its chosen terms, is its own form of intellectual depravity.
Erasing names, tearing down statues, and demonizing any historical reference that upsets the Dogma of Woke. It is all part of a cultural cataclysm that, in as much as its collectivism denies the sovereignty of the Individual with God-given rights, is the antithesis of of those abolition movements of the 1800s.
However well-meaning, that is the movement these changes help propel forward in sweeping over our communities in desire of dismantling everything about the American idea and Judeo-Christian traditions right down to the nuclear family itself.
