WASHINGTON, D.C. – While the entire country seems to be tuned in to the Kavanaugh smear hearings Thursday, another hearing is taking place on Capitol Hill regarding allegations of sexual harassment. That hearing is focused on former Charlotte-area congressman and President Obama appointee Mel Watt, likely won’t get a sliver of the same attention.
Here is the obligatory mention from a N.C. metro-paper, lacking the dramatic hysteria presented by media concerning the Kavanaugh accuser.
“The woman who says she was sexually harassed by Mel Watt, the director of a federal housing agency and former U.S. representative from North Carolina, will testify about her experience before a House committee on Thursday, according to the committee’s schedule.
The House Financial Services Committee, which includes three North Carolina Republicans, will hear from Simone Grimes, an employee at the Federal Housing Finance Agency. She filed a sexual harassment complaint against Watt in May.
Watt, who turned 73 last month, represented Charlotte in the U.S. House from 1993 to 2013 and was appointed by President Barack Obama to lead the Federal Housing Finance Agency in 2013. He took the position in January 2014. His five-year term expires in January 2019.
Watt remains on the job despite Grimes’ claims, which have been investigated by an official at the United States Postal Service.”
As a Democrat, Watt is unlikely to face the same vitriol and rush to judgement that accused Republicans can always expect. Another example of this disparity in treatment is the Democrats’ convenient amnesia about serious allegations of abuse by the second in charge at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) Keith Ellison.
Ellison’s accuser, according to Democrats, is not credible or worth the attention. Ellison won a Democratic primary in Minnesota AFTER these allegations surfaced.
As you witness Democratic senators rambling on about their pride in the Kavanaugh accuser’s courage, and their heartfelt compassion for victims of abuse, remember that none of those same people are giving the time of day to Keith Ellison’s accuser.
The contrast is stark, and should tell us all something about the Democrats’ motives in this #metoo era.
