A third person on Tuesday pleaded guilty to violations of the state’s agent-athlete inducement law for providing gifts and money to football players at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Michael Wayne Johnson Jr., who played quarterback at North Carolina Central University, took an Alford plea, which allowed him to maintain his innocence while acknowledging that the prosecution has enough evidence to convict him.
Superior Court Judge A. Graham Shirley II sentenced Johnson to 48 hours of community service and 12 months unsupervised probation. If he avoids legal trouble for a year, his charges will be dismissed.
Johnson was among those accused by the North Carolina Secretary of State’s Office of working for a Georgia-based agent to lure college players to contract with him to manage their NFL careers.
