Duke Is Officially A “Safe Space” For Illegal Immigrants

The Duke University Student Senate spent their Wednesday officially passing a resolution demanding the university become a “sanctuary campus” to establish a “safe space” for illegal immigrants and protect them from all federal immigration laws.

Duke is the latest radical left university to put “sanctuary campus” policies in place after Donald Trump won the Presidency. Trump has continued to promise strict immigration laws will be enforced when he takes over the White House.

The specific policy the Duke Student Senate has demanded would keep a student’s immigration status secret from federal officials unless they have a court ordered subpoena. The policy would also mandate that officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement be barred from the Duke campus unless they provide a warrant.

According to The Duke Chronicle, the university’s student newspaper, the resolution urges the University to stand in solidarity with students in the United States protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program as well as undocumented students.

“Whereas the President-elect Donald J. Trump has promised to overturn [DACA], Duke has a responsibility to its students as well as the greater Durham community it inhabits,” the resolution reads.

The resolution even “expands financial aid” for any illegal immigrant who “loses their right to work.”

A freshman, Olivia Simpson, a Duke Student Senator, introduced the resolution, and noted that a “sanctuary campus” is symbolic and stems from the idea of a “sanctuary city,” which she apparently feels is a good thing.

“[A sanctuary campus] is a safe space for undocumented students, wherein the University will not outwardly support measures to harm or deport its students,” Simpson said. “That’s what we were talking about in terms of not providing the information on who is undocumented without a warrant [and] not allowing officers on campus without a warrant either.”
