NC Only State to Not Submit COVID-19 Mortality Data to CDC

RALEIGH – The adage that government bureaucracy is cumbersome, outdated, and ineffective is well known. The post office usually serves as a popular example of the truism. North Carolina is adding another anecdote, but this time it’s literally a life and death situation; the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) say our state is the only one to not submit mortality records for COVID-19 and it’s because we have such an outdated system.

As in, a paper system. North Carolina is one of only three states that has not moved to an electronic system to record deaths (and causes of death, etc.), and getting the death certificate info from this pandemic to the CDC has proved too hard. It doesn’t help that Governor Roy Cooper and Health Secretary Mandy Cohen have been actively instructing counties NOT to release death certificate data.

From WCNC:

“[…] While no person’s death is simply a number, the overall data about why people are dying can bring important answers.

“The data we are collecting are based on death certificates,” says Bob Anderson, chief of mortality statistics for the CDC.

Anderson is heading an effort to collect mortality statistics across the country during the pandemic.  States with fewer than ten people who’ve died from COVID-19 get a dash to protect confidentiality.

However, North Carolina has a zero because the state has not submitted information to the CDC. […]

“We don’t have any COVID 19 deaths from North Carolina yet,” Anderson told WCNC Charlotte.

The Defenders investigation found North Carolina is the only state in the country that hasn’t submitted an official count for COVID-19 deaths.

“The problem in North Carolina at the moment is that there is no electronic registration system, death registration has to be done on paper and it takes time,” said Anderson.

The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services says “death certificates can take months to process, and so sites that use death certificate data will likely show low or zero death counts for North Carolina in the first months of the pandemic.” […]”

These are the same public health officials that have admonished us about the shocking risks of a viral pandemic based on the prescient foresight they had, built on models projections viewed through the lens of expertise. They subsequently provided the backing as authoritative truth tellers necessary to numb the public to massive government overreach so we can Flatten the Curve.

These are the people asking you to disrupt, or even sacrifice your livelihood and way of life, and they cannot accurately communicate to the CDC how many people have died of COVID-19 in the last two months.

Where in the world to they derive the authority to suspend our lives in the name of public health when they cannot even accurately track public deaths in timely fashion?
