RALEIGH – If you pay close enough attention, you’ll find a North Carolina connection to just about everything. The Old North State will now have another connection to Canada: Aldona Wos, of Greensboro, former Secretary of the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services under Republican Governor Pat McCrory, has been appointed by President Donald Trump as the U.S. Ambassador to Canada.
From the Greensboro News & Record:
“[…] CBC, CTV and the National Post reported the appointment Tuesday evening.
“Her nomination was first leaked to the media through unnamed sources last spring and was only officially confirmed by the White House on Tuesday,” CBC reported.
The position has been vacant since August.
Wos, a former U.S. ambassador to Estonia, is a retired Greensboro physician who served as secretary of N.C. Department of Health and Human Services from 2013-15. She and husband, Louis DeJoy, are major Republican donors. They hosted a GOP fundraiser that featured Vice President Mike Pence in May.

After the election of liberal Justin Trudeau as Canadian Prime Minister (the one that somehow slipped away from any real backlash from his multiple ‘blackface’ scandals), it’s as important as ever that the United States have a sharp ambassador with a low threshold for nonsense. Wos does not suffer fools gladly, and she will be an effective liaison between the U.S. and our friendly, yet very liberal, neighbor to the north.
Wos, originally from Poland, moved to the United States at the age of six. Her father was part of the Home Army in Poland that resisted the German and Soviet occupations of World War II, and her family helped Jews to escape the Warsaw Ghetto. Other relatives were held in concentration camps before being reunited with family after the Allied Forces liberated them. So, Wos has an intimate knowledge of the perils oppressive regimes and a special appreciation for the American idea.
Moving to Long Island as a little girl with her family to pursue the American dream, Vos aspired to be a doctor. She earned a degree from Warsaw Medical Academy and returned to New York to complete residency and practice in Manhattan for nearly two decades before moving to North Carolina.
